How Does the Moon Affect the Tides?

The key to understanding how the tides work is understanding the relationship between the motion of our planet and the Moon.

The Moon's gravitational forces are strong enough to accelerate the water towards the Moon. This causes the water to 'bulge.' As the Moon orbits our planet and as the Earth rotates, the bulge also moves. The areas of the Earth where the bulging occurs experience High Tide, and the other areas are low tide. Water on the opposite side of Earth facing away from the Moon also bulges outward (high tide), but for a different reason. With the Earth-Moon system, gravity is like a rope that pulls or keeps the two bodies together, and centrifugal force is what keeps them apart. Because the centrifugal force is greater than the Moon's gravitational pull, ocean water on the opposite side of the Earth bulges outward.

Prince Harry Visit

On the 13th of May 2015 Prince Harry was visiting the Odyssey House next-door to Christ the King School. The students started standing by the side of the road waiting for Prince Harry to drive by. After waiting for a while,  the students were invited by an event organiser, to meet Prince Harry outside the Odyssey House. Most of the students of CTK lined up on the driveway to the Odyssey House buzzing with excitement. Many excited squeals came from the students of CTK as Prince Harry walked out of the House to meet us. First he met some disabled students from Ferndale school then came to meet the other students. Most students shook his hand some took photos with him. Mrs Abbott was lucky enough to get a one on one photo with Prince Harry, which she was very pleased about. Unfortunately the Prince had to leave for the airport to move on to his next destination, Prince Harry and the students gave many waves as he drove down the driveway. It was truly an amazing experience that everyone will be talking about for days to come.

Thanks Prince Harry Pics

Thanks Prince Harry

Some of the students were very fortunate today as Prince Harry made some time in his busy schedule to meet some of the CTK students, shake hands and take photos. This is one of the photos that you could view from http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/68503808/live-prince-harry-in-new-zealand--day-5

Chris Hadfield works with the Myth Busters

Room 13 have been watching many of the Chris Hadfield YouTube Videos from Space. Chris Hadfield is a Canadian Astronaut who was the Commander of the International Space Station. He rose to fame with his educational YouTube videos answering questions from space enthusiasts.

This video is about: How do astronauts on board the International Space Station spend their downtime? Jamie and Adam(Mythbusters) learn about Chris Hadfield's clever "space darts" invention, and propose a new game for Hadfield to test while he's on orbit.

Can Room 13 come up with any other Micro Gravity Games?

Written Language: Describe the Picture 2

Describe the Picture 2

The suns rays illuminates through the thick canopy onto the dirt track. The trees tower above me like sky scrapers allowing a glimpse of light to shine through as if someone opened a curtain.

By Tom S

The suns rays are seeping through the canopy of trees as lushes green trees storm over top of me. This old mysterious dirt track cutting through the trees as more bursts of light come out of the huge rooftop. Clouds move over the sun, the bursts of light stop as the forest remains dark.

By Mick F

The sun peeks through the dark forest as the sun pierces onto the scorched ground. It leaves an enchanted shine on the road.

By Liam T

As the golden rays peek through the canopy it makes a touchdown on the forgotten dirt road. The tall trees invade the track with its towering shadow. The light enchanted the track as it brings the road to life.

By Nathan F

The sun bursts through the green canopy like a laser shining through a wall ready to shoot. The tall king-size trees form an umbrella over the wavy road. The sun ray peeks through the lush green trees like a rainbow.

By Sam R

The sun beams pierces through the green canopy as the golden glimmer appears on the soft, muddy, dirt road. The trees tower above the sky like giants.

By Jamie H

The sun shines through the green leaves making a sun ny patch on the dirt path. The trees go over me like a roof.

By Bella H

The golden sun peeks through the tree on to the track. The trees tower over top of me like a giant. With the colour green all around me, like it is the only colour there.

Describe the picture.

The dull, colourless forest stood lifeless and withered. Mist covering it like a thick blanket of sadness. An eerie silence broke through the trees.

By Katia B

A ribbon of white is throughout the forest and the thick twigs whisper my name. Swaying gently, they shelter me from whatever comes near. The darkness of beyond sends a shiver down my spine but I still carry on my journey through the gloomy forest.

By Niamh S

The dark gloomy fog drops from above as it consumes the forest. Menacing shadows start lurking in the corners, as if they're ready to strike. The slim, murky, treacherous arms start to emerge forward.

By George M

The dark gloomy forest was engulfed by the misty fog. The trees looked down on all the dead bushes scattered along the forest floor. The ground was covered in a blanket of pine needles and twigs. The mist descended onto the ground, covering the forest.

By Samuel d R

Fog makes a heavy blanket over top of the gloomy bushes as it looks like a black and white canvas.

Written Language: Describe the ocean

In this task the children were to describe the ocean.

He wore a face of stormy grey and ripples for his wrinkles. Calm and gentle as the autumn breeze, with glistening sea-green eyes and licking the bay sands in summer. But disturb him with your boats in the winter months, and his bellows will slap overcast waves, enraged murky eyes will swallow you whole. But underneath is all are slimy curls of the seaweed, and the homes of the vibrant multi-coloured fish.

By Carmen R

I swim out to the infinite ocean. The crystal blue blanket stretches around the world. I can hear the waves roar as they crash down on the shore. I dive under the surface to find myself starring down at all the beautiful fish swimming in schools creating different colours just like a rainbow. I ascent to the surface and look around once again at the magical sight.

By Marvin T

The moonlight shines on the glistening waves licking the sand. Shimmering like the water had been turned into diamonds. The waves devouring the rough rocks until quickly slipping back into the water. Waves ricochet off the rocky shore spraying onto the sand.

Written Language: I am nervous.

Quick Explanation:
  • To create an interesting story, the writer needs to show not tell the reader about people, places, and things they are writing about.
  • Showing creates mental pictures in the reader’s mind.
  • When readers get a clear picture, they are more engaged in the writer’s story.
The students in Room 13 had to rewrite the sentence 'I am nervous.' Here are some of their ideas.

I was shivering throughout my body. My legs were trembling as I cautiously shuffled towards the microphone. It was only when I itched my nose that I realized I was sweating. My heart was thumping more than a set of drums. I have become completely paralyzed. I finally muttered a word... "Uh, hi?" Yes, I did say hi as a question. The eyes of the audience burned through my confidence like lasers. Butterflies had spawned in  my stomach.

By Grace H

A sick feeling swims around in my stomach like a goldfish. I shake like a natural disaster. I sway side to side, screaming quietly inside myself. My feet roll outwards, back and forth and I fidget with my hands shaking unconditionally. I feel light headed and everything goes dark, as if I am in a deep sleep.

By Letitia H

My whole body feels like an earthquake, swaying side to side, back and forth. My heart pounding with every step I take. My palms are sweating as I play with them,. I am lightheaded. I start to speak, I mumble a few sentences but no real words come out. Nervousness has taken over again.

By Hannah S

A shiver went down my spine. I could feel my hands sweating like crazy. I thought my legs were going to break as it felt like there was an earthquake beneath me. It felt like my stomach was in a knot. It felt like the whole world was looking, starring, and judging me. I felt the walls closing in on me. I felt as if there was a kangaroo jumping up and down on a trampoline in my stomach.

By Kiara K

I am sweltering with sweat. My palms are coated with perspiration. Although I feel hot, my face is frozen with fear. My heart beats faster. My hands shivered as the tension builds up inside me.

By Rallen L

I am drowning in my own sweat. Perspiration rushes out of my palms. Fear freezes my face. My hands won't keep still as the tension devours inside me.

By Victor P

My teeth are chattering. I have got flapping butterflies in my stomach. I'm sweating so much I'm constantly having to wipe my forehead with my sleeve. My hearts pounding rapidly against my chest, I feel it moving up towards my throat. I'm trying to convince myself of the positive side of things.
